Allen & Hoshall provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services for Erlanger Park, the new home of the Chattanooga Lookouts and a year-round sports, entertainment, and community destination in Chattanooga’s South Broad District. The project transformed a former industrial foundry site into a modern 8,032-seat ballpark while preserving and adaptively reusing several historically significant structures.
The ballpark includes concession kitchens, food-preparation areas, bars, beverage stations, storage, and support spaces throughout the concourses, suites, clubs, and event venues. Engineering systems support commercial cooking and refrigeration equipment, exhaust and makeup air, grease waste, natural gas, domestic hot water, fire suppression, and electrical service.
Premium areas include private suites, clubs, bars, and indoor-outdoor hospitality spaces overlooking the field. Allen & Hoshall coordinated HVAC, lighting, power, plumbing, fire protection, and technology infrastructure for televisions, digital displays, point-of-sale equipment, computers, audiovisual systems, and wireless communications.
Team facilities include home and visiting locker rooms, coaches’ areas, training and treatment rooms, laundry, equipment storage, offices, and meeting spaces. Systems were designed to support ventilation, humidity control, hot-water and drainage demands, as well as computers, televisions, video-review equipment, and team communications.
A major component of the project was the renovation of the historic Pattern Shop, constructed in 1936. The building was converted into the park’s largest and most flexible event venue while retaining its exposed brick walls, large industrial windows, and exposed steel roof structure. The second floor includes event space and an exterior patio and deck overlooking the field. Movable partitions allow the space to accommodate multiple smaller groups or large events, including conferences, banquets, weddings, concerts, and community gatherings. Supporting kitchens, bars, food-service areas, audiovisual equipment, televisions, computer connections, lighting controls, and power distribution allow the venue to be reconfigured for a variety of uses. The first floor includes a food hall, team offices, conference rooms, and associated administrative and technology spaces.
Allen & Hoshall also supported the adaptive reuse of the Powerhouse, which dates to 1882 and is the oldest surviving building on the former foundry site. Located along the Tennessee Riverwalk, the Powerhouse serves as a primary entrance to the park and was renovated into a two-level indoor-outdoor event facility. The two levels can operate independently or together for private events, group outings, business meetings, weddings, and gatherings of approximately 50 to 450 guests. Engineering systems support the facility’s bars, catering and food-service functions, restrooms, event lighting, televisions, audiovisual equipment, computer connectivity, and flexible indoor-outdoor operations.
Throughout Erlanger Park, Allen & Hoshall’s engineers coordinated systems serving public concourses, restrooms, concessions, kitchens, bars, suites, event venues, administrative offices, team spaces, training facilities, broadcast and technology areas, and outdoor gathering spaces. The integrated design provides the capacity, flexibility, reliability, and life-safety systems necessary for professional baseball operations while allowing the park to function as a year-round entertainment and community venue.
