National Civil Rights Museum Legacy Expansion Project

Memphis, Tennessee

The National Civil Rights Museum Legacy Expansion Project is a transformative effort to revitalize the historic Lorraine Motel, the site of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. This project is not just a physical upgrade but a deepened commitment to preserving and enhancing a site of immense cultural significance. The museum’s expansion includes new exhibits exploring the evolution of the Civil Rights Movement, modern activism, and ongoing struggles for equality, making it a powerful educational tool for future generations.

Allen & Hoshall’s role in this project was pivotal, leveraging advanced technologies to meet the unique challenges of working within a historically significant site. The firm utilized Drone Photogrammetry, GPS, and Laser Scanning to create a comprehensive boundary survey and a 3D model of the museum and Legacy Park. This innovative approach allowed for unparalleled accuracy in planning and executing the renovation.

One of the project’s key challenges was an underground exhibit tunnel beneath Legacy Park, which required detailed laser scanning. The data collected ensured the tunnel was accurately documented, preventing conflicts with new structures. The project’s complexity highlights its importance and sets a new standard for construction projects in historically significant contexts.
